We can’t really talk about ‘the dharma’ because that makes it a thing and it’s not. Yet it’s a widely popular word these days, particularly in new age communities. But very few seem to know what it is or how to speak about it.
I’m writing a post on what several great wisdom teachers have had to say about dharma over the ages. It turns out that there’s more to be said about what it is not than what it is. It isn’t, for example, a belief system, philosophy, religion, set of laws- none of those things.
The second century monastic Nagarjuna came as close as anyone in pointing out that dharma was in the nature of insight or intuition about how things actually were, what some would call ‘reality.’
I hope you’ll look for my post in the coming days. It won’t be about my ideas but a curation of what others with far deeper understanding have said or written.
